In 2003, a number of
Guardian Media regional titles started a Lifestyle supplement, and I was drafted
in to produce the pictures for a weekly page in the entertainments section,
which is known as either ‘Night Life’ or ‘On The Town’. I visit a pre
arranged pub, wine bar or nightclub and photograph willing customers, who are
shown having a good time. In some of the papers, a person is circled on the
page, and is known as the ‘Ringed Reveller’ and then wins a prize, which can
range from a bottle of wine, to a meal for two, to a night’s bed and breakfast
in Waterfoot in
Although the pictures
are quite casual, almost snapshots I hope that they will form a valuable
historical record of leisure in the 21st Century in years to come.
Clubbing jobs are probably my favourite for these columns, as they give me a
chance to do a bit of creative reportage, with something akin to Martin Parr of
Magnum's style being used.
Carl Marsden, the News Editor at the Oldham Advertiser summed up the effect of the column as follows, "Since its inception the 'One The Town' page has become hugely-popular with Oldham Advertiser readers. Capturing a fantastic cross-section of fun-seekers across the borough's districts it has become a 'must-check' page for all our readers hoping to spot family, friends - and perhaps even enemies(!) - on a night out."
One club in particular however deserves a page of its own due to its longevity and unique character- Candlelight!
